    For auction:
From Henry Woodhouse Archive, 1926 letter rom
    D. Napier & Son of London, makers of the
    famous Lion aero engine.
Letter addressed to Henry Woodhouse at Scientific Age magazine in New York City from the Managing Director at D. Napier & Son in London. 2 pages connected in the upper left-hand corner, see pics.
Very nice letterhead with raised lettering in the heading. Great content!
Content of the letter: The D. Napier & Son managing director is sending Woodhouse a letter regarding the proven success of the Napier Lion Aero Engine. The new Avro-Napier Avenger, a fast single seater scout, designed by A.V. Roe Ltd. uses this engine. Claims it is the fastest single seater scout in the world, but the details are secret. The letter states a photo is enclosed, but unfortunately, it is no longer with the letter. (If I find it, I will notify the buyer.)
    Letter:
    H. Woodhouse, Scientific Age, 16th September 1926
    Dear Sir,
    Speed.
The advantage of the Aeroplane is its great speed. Each year sees the production of machines giving a higher performance than previously.
Naturally for the increase in speed much depends upon the engine, not only in the great power it develops, but in the many refinements in design that uses its power to the greatest advantage.
The Napier Lion aero engine has proved particularly successful in high speed machines. It possesses great power, is light in weight, compact, but above everything it is absolutely reliable.
Among the new type machines designed in this country is the Avro-Napier Avenger, a very fast single seater scout designed by A.V. Roe Ltd., and fitted with one of the Napier engines. Although we are not permitted to give details of the performance of this machine, it is claimed to be the fastest single seater scout in the World.
The enclosed is a photograph of this machine taken at top speed which may interest your readers, and we think you will agree certainly gives the impression that it is able to support this claim.
Yours faithfully, [signature] Managing Director, D. Napier & Son
The Napier Lion aero engine has its own wiki page: "
The Napier Lion was a 12-cylinder, petrol-fueled 'broad arrow' W12 configuration aircraft engine built by D. Napier & Son from 1917 until the 1930s
. A number of advanced features made it the most powerful engine of its day and kept it in production long after other contemporary designs had been superseded. It is particularly well known for its use in a number of racing designs, for aircraft, boats and cars."
    D. Napier & Son began business in Great Britain in 1808 and was known for precision engineering.
