This is a really great report for any mineral collectors out there! It's like a treasure map!
This is USGS Professional Paper 453,
Geology of the Abajo Mountains Area, San Juan County, Utah
. Published in 1964, this is a scarce and interesting work, seldom seen on Ebay. This report consists of the
    110 page
book plus all five of the geologic maps plus an interesting folded diagram, that come in a pocket in the back of the book. Two of the maps are large full-color geologic maps, one is a shaded relief maps of the area, and another has underground workings of one of the mines.
This report examines the geology of this beautiful area in southeastern Utah. The area is known for uranium-vanadium mines, gold & silver mines, and copper mines, and there are descriptions and locations for many deposits in the text. Plus many of the
locations are shown on the shaded relief map, making this a perfect guide for a mineral collector wanting to visit these sites.
The geology of this area is complex, with typical Colorado Plateau sedimentary rocks uplifted in a setting where numerous granitic intrusions invaded the layering as giant sills (laccoliths, as they are known.) Some of these were accompanied by mineralizing solutions, resulting in the gold, silver, and copper deposits.
It is a mineral rich area. I saw mention of the following as I browsed through the text:
    Chalcopyrite
    Pyrite
    Sphalerite
    Galena
    Ruby silver
    Gold
    Limonite pseudomorphs of pyrite
    Azurite
    Malachite
    Chalcocite
Some of the uranium is found within fossil logs in the formations!
I believe with some additional research, some of these mines are likely to hold many more minerals than those listed here, and I may have missed some in the text. There are many mines, so there are lots of opportunities to explore and check them out. These are some of the mines discussed and described in the text:
    Uranium
    :
    Shay Mountain deposit
    Harts Draw deposit
    Lakes claim deposit
    Shay Road deposit
    Robertson Pasture deposit
    Sunshine Mining Claim
    Gold-Silver:
    Dream mine
    Dixon's mine
    Viking mine
    Log Cabin claim
    Copper:
    Copper Queen mine
    Tuffy Copper mine
This would be of interest to mineral collectors, local and regional residents, or anyone interested in Utah geology. It is a scarce item. Very nice to find it well-preserved.
